Vision

The major goal of this project is to understand at a fundamental level how mobile wireless networks can be designed in a practical heterogeneous setting. Our approach is to be able to jointly exploit and explore opportunities such as mobility, fading, and user/traffic predictability to make the overall system more efficient.

Summary of Accomplishments

Our accomplishments can be placed under four broad categories:
  1. Theoretical foundation development

We are continuing to develop various elements required for an analytical foundation for double opportunism, i.e., joint exploitation of the wireless channel and mobility considering the practical realities of the wireless environment for content distribution networks. We studied critical delay of mobile networks under realistic network mobility models such as Levy walks and Levy flights. These models have been verified to work well using human mobility traces. This is in contrast to traditional exponential based models that do not appropriately capture human mobility. We investigated the speed of and scope of information spread in multi-hop wireless networks.

  2. Algorithm design for efficient and scalable mobile content sharing

Leveraging the theoretical foundation, we have designed algorithms for a variety of practical wireless networking settings such as rapidly changing mobile environments; multi-channel capabilities; and channel, network and sensing uncertainty.

  3. Protocol and system development for mobile content sharing

We designed a chained gateway system to improve the quality of information service in wide-range wireless networks. Such a system is particularly important to the passengers in long-distance trains, whose wireless networks often suffer from annoying service deterioration due to ever-changing wireless environments.

  4. Case studies

Mobile social and visual information sharing in wireless networks: In mobile handset systems and networking, we have conducted research in telecommunication infrastructure measurement, ad hoc social networking, and smartphone application engineering. We are the first to measure and study the performance of HSPA mobile cellular networks at large scale, where we made several important and unexpected observations. We have developed smartphone based mobile social networking tools such as TurfCast, E-SmallTalker, and E-Shadow to support convenient, rapid ad hoc networking. We have also investigated smartphones' potential as a health monitoring tool to detect human falls and drunk driving. More details are in the following link: Mobile Handset Systems and Networking.
